Emerging Musicians at Eveleigh

A group of Sylvanvale clients showcased their musical talent through a unique event entitled “Emerge Outside”.

The event required participants to attend a two-day sound workshop before showcasing their pieces at a special live performance at the Carriageworks in Eveleigh. Described by organisers Jacqui O’Reilly and Randolf Reimann as “Electroacoustic Masterclasses in Soundscape”, Emerge Outside centred on found sounds, also known as field recordings.

Participants submitted a broad range of sounds collected from their home environment, which were then used to build a soundscape, along with some funky beats, strong vocals and dynamic sound effects. Anne Howland, Canaan Bryson and Aaron McMahon all participated in the event and enjoyed the opportunity to make musical pieces from everyday sounds. The live performance brought together an eclectic array of performers using sounds, voice, loops and beats to showcase their musical talent.

The project was made possible by a Quick Response Grant, provided by Regional Arts NSW (an Australian Government initiative), and Accessible Arts / arts + disability NSW.

We thank David Cretney for his enthusiasm and commitment to this project, Brendan O’Connell and Sharon Nazer for their support and the whole crew at Catherine Field for coming out to Redfern to support Aaron.
