Emma Raey Tye and Deanne Morgan enjoyed a chat and a photograph with NSW Premier Kristina Keneally at the announcement of additional funding for the Stronger Together initiative on International Day of People with a Disability, which is held annually on 3 December.
Emma Raey and Deanne, who live at one of Sylvanvale’s group homes, were glad to be at the announcement and especially excited when the Premier took the time out to say hello. They were joined by Sylvanvale Accommodation Manager Todd Inglis and Social Educator Gemma Spencer.
The Stronger Together program aims to supply better services to people with a disability and their families. Phase one ran between 2006 and 2010, injecting $1.3 billion into the disability sector. Phase two commences in 2011 and a further $2 billion will be spent over the next five years.
Minister for Disability Services Peter Primrose said that the funding will help “deliver a fair go” and believes that “it is an exciting time for the disability services sector.”
Premier Keneally said, “The Stronger Together program creates an inclusive and better society.” She said she is privileged to be a part of this initiative and the impact it has had on people with disabilities. “We’re making the service fit the person – not the person fit the service. Stronger Together has definitely made a positive difference to peoples’ lives.”
